1. Teatro alla Scala, Milan, Italy

Jet off to Milan from € 4,200

Milan’s Teatro alla Scala is perhaps the most famous opera house in the world. Built in 1778, the theatre is renowned for its four tiers with separate lodges; it is the home of Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi. Milan's Teatro alla Scala is the one theatre with the biggest claim to be connected with the word "opera". Opera devotees choose this theatre because of its super acoustics; La Scala’s most ingenious feature is in fact the concave channel under the wooden floor of the orchestra.

Programme

This year's opera season goes until the end of November with two major shows. Händel's Giulio Cesare and Strauss' Die Ägyptische Helena. Check out the full programme and browse the ballet's season as well.

2. Teatro di San Carlo, Naples, Italy

Jet off to Naples from € 6,200

Visit Naples' landmark and go back in time to when Rossini's premiered some of his famous oeuvres. Built by King Charles of Bourbon and opened in 1737, the stunning red-and-gold theater is the world’s oldest theater with continuous performances. Until Milan's La Scala, Naples' Teatro di San Carlo was Italy's most prestigious theatre.

Programme

The theatre has already released the new seasons's programme which will bring to the stage some great performances such as Tosca and Norma. Take some time to consult the full programme and choose your favourite shows. In the meantime, theatre-goers can enjoy a mix of opera, classical music and some of the biggest Italian songwriters' performances. Book your ticket for Ermione, Mozart's Così fan tutte or Gino Paoli on tour.

3. The Royal Opera House, London, England

Jet off to London from € 4,800

Welcome to the opera house where George Handel's masterpieces live on. The Royal Opera House' current building is not the original. Since the beginning of the 18th century two other opera houses have stood in the theatre's present location at Covent Garden. Not only was Handel's work performed in this house from 1735 until his death but he also composed a great number of his operas and oratorios for this place.

Programme

"Whether you're new to ballet and opera or you've loved them all your life, we have something for you." This is the Royal Opera House motto and judging by their variegated programme, we agree that the theatre lives by its words. When opera pieces like "Othello", "La Traviata" and "Death in Venice" meet Dicken's "A Christmas Carol", we can assure you that the Royal Opera House has something suitable for every age and taste.

4. Vienna State Opera, Vienna, Austria

Jet off to Vienna from € 4,200

Austria's capital city is hard to beat when it comes to music and traditions. If winter may not be the best time of the year to experience a performance under the stars, that's when the Vienna State Opera becomes opera lovers' perfect refuge. The theatre is famous for its many performances; each season it stages over 300 performances between opera and ballet.

5. Zurich Opera House, Zurich, Switzerland

Fly to Zurich from € 6,800

The neo-classical building which is now home to the Zurich Opera House was built in 1891 to replace an old building which was damaged due to fire. The opera house today takes a very modern approach to the arts; with more than 300 performances every season, the repertoire tries to accommodate divers tastes and, above all, tries to stay connected to the "Zeitgeist".

At the moment, the Zurich Opera House offers, among many, Mozart's Così fan tutte and the epically dramatic Belshazzar.

6. The Opéra (Palais) Garnier, Paris, France

Jet off to Paris from € 5,200

The Opéra (Palais) Garnier is not the only world-class opera house in Paris. Together with the more contemporary Opéra de la Bastille, these two theatres contribute to foster Paris' high-class opera scene. Palais Garnier dates back to 1875 and it is an imposing building located in the 9th arrondissement. A real neo-baroque masterpiece, the lavish Palais is named after its architect–Charles Garnier– and decorated with detailed marble, columns, and statues of Greek heroes.
