Enjoy the BRIT Awards
The BRIT Awards are the most prestigious award for British pop music, roughly comparable to the Grammy in the US. The award was first given out in 1977 as part of the BPI Awards in honor of Elisabeth II's silver jubilee. The letters stood for the British Phonographic Industry. Five years later, the event was established as an annual event. The awards ceremony is officially known as "The BRIT Awards" since 1989. The Plattenfirma's strong influence in determining the prize winners results in frequent heated debates about the viability of the prize winners. Due to this, 1992 saw the introduction of an alternative to the Mercury Music Prize.
