How VOR Works

The VOR system emits a VHF radio composite signal, including reference and variable signals. Aircraft equipped with VOR receivers can interpret these signals to determine their bearing (radial) from or to the VOR station. This process involves:

  • Reference and Variable Signals: The VOR station transmits two signals simultaneously. The reference signal is constant, while the variable signal rotates 30 times per second. As received by the aircraft, the phase difference between these signals determines the aircraft's radial from the station.
  • Radials: VOR stations broadcast 360 radials, creating a "spoke wheel" of navigational paths radiating from the station. Each radial represents a specific magnetic bearing from the VOR station.

Types of VOR

  • Conventional VOR: Provides azimuth information, allowing pilots to determine their bearing to or from the station.
  • Doppler VOR (DVOR): Enhances the basic VOR by using the Doppler effect to improve accuracy and reliability, especially at higher altitudes.
