The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) represents a comprehensive term for satellite navigation systems that provide autonomous geo-spatial positioning with global coverage. Components of GNSS

How GNSS Works

The principle behind GNSS is trilateration. GNSS receivers calculate their distance from several satellites by measuring the time signals travel from the satellites to the receiver. Since the speed of the signals (the speed of light) and the satellites' exact positions are known, the receiver can compute its position with remarkable precision. This system works 24/7 under any weather conditions, anywhere in the world.

GNSS encompasses several satellite navigation systems operated by different countries or regions. The most well-known include:

  • GPS (Global Positioning System): Operated by the United States, it was the first GNSS system and is still the most widely used.
