One of the major art institutions in Great Britain is the Royal Academy of Arts in London. She dedicates herself to the teaching and promotion of architecture, painting, and other visual arts. Under the direction of the painter Joshua Reynolds, George III founded the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768 with the support of 34 notable artists and architects, including two women, the painters Angelika Kauffmann and Mary Moser. A dispute inside the then-dominant artistic organization Society of Artists of Great Britain served as the resolution. William Chambers, an architect, terminated this association after he allegedly ran for president. The King eventually completed the formation of a new artistic organization after making good use of his connections to the English royal household. They began their work formally in the year 1769. The Academy initially had a maximum of 40 members; today, there are up to 80.
