Enjoy Palio dell’Assunta
One of the toughest horse races in the world is the Palio di Siena (also referred to as the Palio or the Il Palio in Italian). In general, a palio refers to a horse-based wagering contest between neighboring regions in Italy. The Piazza del Campo, the city's main square, is where the Palio of Siena is held. The 17 Contraden (dt. Gegend), or Siena's city portions, compete in the race. It has been held twice a year since the Middle Ages and is regarded as the most significant cultural event in Siena. The race is held on July 2 in honor of the Madonna of Provenzano (Palio di Provenzano), and on August 16 in honor of the Maria Himmelfahrt (Palio dell'Assunta).
