The Automobile Club de l'Ouest hosts the 24-Stunden-Rennen de Le Mans, a long-distance race for sports cars, outside of the French city of Le Mans. Since 1923, the race has been run on the 24 Hours circuit south of the city, with portions of the track used as landways while no race is being held there. Originally, the route extended all the way to the center of Le Mans, with a circumference of about 17,3 km. It was shortened to its current length of around 13,5 km in 1932.
