The first of three Masters tournaments on sand and the third tennis tournament in the 1990-instituted Masters Series, according to the Masters tournament calendar, is the Monte Carlo Masters. One of the oldest and most storied tennis tournaments in the world, the Traditionsturnier was first held in 1897. It became open to professionals in 1969, marking the beginning of the Open Era. It is one of the most prestigious sand-pit tournaments because it has been a part of the Masters Series from the beginning. The tournament, which is akin to the illustrious Masters at the Hamburger Rothenbaum, was scheduled to advance in 2007 as part of a significant ATP Tour reorganization. The tournament administration then denounced the ATP and, in contrast to Hamburg, was successful; the event was kept in the series. However, unlike other Masters tournaments, Top-30 players are not required to participate in the tournament in Monte Carlo. Despite being run by a Monaco-based tournament organization, the tournament is not held there. The venue, the Monte Carlo Country Club, is located in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin on the monegasque-French border on French soil.
