The French Open, the second tennis tournament in the Grand Slam Series, has been held annually in Paris between the middle of May and the beginning of June at the Stade Roland Garros in the 16th arrondissement since 1891. The tournament and the tennis complex are named after aviation pioneer Roland Garros (1888–1918). The French Open, the only sand court competition in the Grand Slam Series, presents a unique challenge to the players because play on red clay moves much more slowly than, say, on a hard court. This has led to the matches lasting, on average, longer than games at other Grand-Slam tournaments. Rafael Nadal of Spain (14 wins) and Chris Evert of the United States (7 wins) were able to win the most individual titles.
